Grizzly bears & cougars. One thing I felt I need

Grizzly bears & cougars.

One thing I felt I needed to do this year is a bear spray mini course on all the trips. I see people carry it but I can say less than 10% have actually sprayed bear spray. I believe educating people on actual protection is key. It really is us verse nature out there. With the bear spray mini course we use training spray and we will let everyone spray it before we go.

I will always carry a gun on my trips but I believe if a bear is 5 feet from you the spray will give you a little chance whether the gun let the bear get that close or not.

Another reason why I say no dogs on trips is because in this situation I know dozer will have my back or at least die trying and that’s all you can ask for from a mountain dog is to protect you and warn you about other critters in the area.

Another thing I don’t see discussed very often is cougars!! We are finding more and more of them in places we didn’t even know existed. To be honest they’re everywhere. They’ve been spotted by Toad River all the way to Tumbler. So know they’re in the area.

Whether it’s a bear or cougar I believe everyone should be prepared and offering this is one of the things that is most important to me on trips. Giving people the practice what needs to be practiced. Trust me these trips are more than just tours.

This summer I would love to record a video of me spraying it and show you all the different ways to deal with certain bears! I plan to do quite a bit more video taping this year as well for on trips and at home of the things we learn, from tarp tying, to knots, first aid on blisters, and more!

These trips were about the views at the beginning, but now after 7 years I've realized its way more than the mountain top views.

It's an amazing sport especially when you do it remotely. It's a great workout and flows at a great pace. This event is open to everyone from beginners to advanced. This is a great way to try XSKI or just hit the trails in our beautiful backyard.

$60 - Lunch included.
Trail length - 7KM

Let’s talk a little bit about the Wolverine Nord

Let’s talk a little bit about the Wolverine Nordic & Mountain Society. They are the backbone of the Tumbler Ridge trails. Signs, bridges, and any improvements are done by this non-profit organization AND done by volunteers. If it wasn’t for them the trails wouldn’t be marked, sustainable, and managed like they are. WNMS has received several awards in recognition of their work and their trails show for it.

I wouldn’t be able to offer hikes in the area without their help and I want you all to know that $5 from every booking will be going to their society. When you book a backpacking or hiking trip in the area know you’re making a difference.

When you support me, know we’re giving back. In the end, we all have the same purpose and that is to enjoy the great outdoors while making sure all goals are met to make it sustainable for everyone to enjoy!

Now the exciting part, bookings are finally open for day hikes and backpacking trips. They’ll be open to the public tomorrow and I can’t wait to share what we have in store for you all!

Avalanche Safety Training. AST - 1 is now available through Northern Rockies Fitness! Snowshoe/Ski version!

In an AST 1, you'll learn how to recognize avalanche terrain, understand the avalanche forecast, plan your trips, and perform a companion rescue.

The term know before you go is crucial when it comes to living in the North or around snow for that matter. We experience long winter months which engages us in all sorts of snow terrain. Teaching people about the outdoors is one our favourite things and I can’t wait to team up with Instructor - @highmarkavalanchesafety and offer this to all you go getters in the winter!

We will be emailing out a study guide for you to do on your own time before the field day. There will be a zoom meeting March 11, 2023 at 7:00 PM for a Q&A.

March 12, 2023 - Field day! Tumbler Ridge, BC. Snowshoe/Ski access. 5 KM. Elevation gain 300M.
